What's So Great About Puerto Vallarta?

Puerto Vallarta has:
  • Good water everywhere
  • English speakers
  • The same latitude as Hawaii, and a moderate climate
  • A good exchange rate
  • Excellent restaurants, international cuisine
  • According to Lisette Orozco, well-traveled student and recent arrival from Mexico City, "Puerto Vallarta is very beautiful and peaceful. It's well-guarded, being a tourist center. There's no threat to travelers there. And the water is good! 10 minutes away is the town of Sayulita, where quite a few Santa Cruzans own homes."

About Judy Ford, Condo Owner and Generous Tutor

Judy Ford tutors our only Cuban student. Her name is Laura and she is currently working as a dentist at Salud para la Gente. Here’s a smile showing her predictably gorgeous teeth, with her tutor proudly looking on.

“Laura reads and writes quite well, and she passed her citizenship test. She’s working hard to improve listening and speaking. She just obtained her California DDS license, too,” writes Judy. And there’s more! Student and now Santa Cruz Literacy Program employee, Gisela, is her patient! “She’s a good dentist,” reports Gisela.

About Susan Rexrode, Condo Owner and Generous Tutor

Susan’s student knew nothing about the library. “María didn’t know you could take books out for free, read and return. We’ve gotten her a library card. Maria is starting to improve, just over the last couple of sessions. At first she did not appear to be studying her lessons at home, which those of us who have had small children can certainly understand. Unfortunately, when she would come unprepared it also made her reluctant to speak. María’s husband had taken ESL at Cabrillo, and now he’s supporting her to learn. Her goal is to attend Cabrillo, too.”
